(the introduction to a manual on PR)

What is PR?

PR is public relations. This is a profession that people go to University to study for. It is a varied profession with a wide range of associated skills. And PR professionals go by a range of titles including:

  • Spin Doctor
  • Advertising Agency/Consultant
  • PR Consultant
  • Marketing Consultant
  • Business Consultant

The reality is:

You can be your own PR professional.
You don’t need a degree;
you just need to learn some basic principles.
Then you need to practice these
and start getting your stories out there.

Most business people would equate PR with press releases, but it is so much more than that. PR can be:

    • Press releases
    • Competitions
    • Letters to your clients
    • Letters to your staff, Trade Unions, etc
    • Media interviews
    • Letters to shareholders
    • Politicking
    • Exhibitions and shows
    • Public speaking
    • Gimmicks and stunts
    • Advertising
    • Sponsorship
    • Training
    • Brochures
    • Web sites and pages

Let’s look at some specific types of PR activity (you will find templates for these in the back of this manual).
